LG G6 recently upgraded to Oreo (although I believe the problem occurred in Nougat as well).

I use Dolphin as my primary browser but have Chrome installed for occasional testing...it isn't used very often at all.

Used DiskUsage to determine what was using up my internal space and discovered Chrome had about a Gig used. After opening Chrome and closing it, the space was returned. Since then, when I notice I'm short on space, I open and close Chrome. Each time 500 MB to 1 GB is freed up.

Any thoughts as to what is happening?

Welcome to Android Central! It's primarily cached data, which is how browsers can improve load times for web pages. Right now, my Chrome has 823 MB of cached data. You can always clear the cache, but that will lead to slower browsing.
