Why did text message ringtones go away with Oreo?

[Android Central Question]

In previous Android versions I had custom tones for various contacts. It was a great way to organize and prioritize the messages I received. Now with the Oreo upgrade(?) all of that is gone. Any way to get that back, or do I have to hope it gets cleared up?

And if you're on a Samsung device, grab the most recent update to Samsung's messaging app, this update has now added per-thread notification customization...

Despite that thread being in the general Oreo section, the announcement ONLY applies to Samsung devices. You'll need to follow the advice of @belodion if you have a device from another manufacturer.
