Android Messages contact tones

I am trying Android Messages, but have found a glitch. I can set notification tones for a contact on a per-thread basis, but not a per-contact basis. In other words, once I delete the conversation, the contact's tone goes back to default tone. I really wish that they would fix it.

That's how it's always been for stock Android. Contacts is a separate app from Messages.

You can use SMS Popup to set a per-contact tone.
