Why does my htc keep telling me i have a mic plugged in?

So my phone is old and pretty beat up but I just wanted to know if this occurs often with the HTC desire 626. So what keeps happening is that I got some new skull candy basic earbuds they do not have a microphone or volume buttons on them, and yet whenever I plug them in my phone seems to think that they have a mic and starts skipping songs raising the volume and a bunch of other random stuff. Can anyone help me out cause I used another headset keep in mind the male bit on my earbuds is the same length as the older headset I was using but my phone had no problems with them at all. Is it the Jack on my phone or is it a bug has anyone else had this problem?
