I am trying to update my moto e (2nd gen) to the latest version of android, but i cant find a way to use my mobile data.
My "broadband" internet is, quite frankly, crap. as in 120kb/s crap. At best.
On the other hand, I have completely free and unlimited use of 3g, sometimes 4g mobile internet, depending on the weather, which is infinitely faster (staff phone).
Is there a way to use mobile internet instead, as it wont take me a week to update my phone?
    Thanks

    Welcome to Android Central!

Unfortunately, no. I'm not aware of any modern Android phones that'll allow firmware updates over mobile data. But there are plenty of open WiFi connections - I frequently use the hotspots at Panera Bread and Starbucks in the US (through a VPN, however, which is highly recommended as a means to protect your privacy when connected to publically-accessible hotspots).

This must be different based on carrier. For example, I'm on Verizon and it'll start downloading OTA updates regardless of my Wi-Fi status. No Wi-Fi? It'll start downloading anyway. So I'd suggest to the OP turning your Wi-Fi off and then manually trying to update through your phone settings and see what happens.

You're right, it must be carrier-dependent. I've never been able to OTA update on T-Mobile (or perhaps that was just an iPhone - and evidently Moto - restriction?)
