Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Do you mean that you see a lock icon while you're calling? If the screen stays on while you put it up to your ear, that probably means the phone doesn't have a proximity sensor, and therefore can't automatically turn off the screen when you hold the phone up to your ear (which prevents accidental screen touches caused by your face). For these phones, you typically have to double-tap the screen or swipe it to unlock it during a call -- this is how they protect you from accidental touches during a call.
