Gmail is my most active app and double notifications come in for each new mail. They appear on the status bar with an interval of less than a second. (2 icons are left on the status bar.)
The same thing happens with What's up, but I rarely use that app.
I looked around in the setup to see if some other app is maybe duplicating the notification. I couldn't see anything obvious. I decided as a final step to block gmail notifications, and now the gmail notifications are zero.
