Why can't I setup my custom domain Gmail account in the Mail app?

I have a Google Apps custom email address (ie not @gmail.com but it works the same). When I try to use the Gmail imap settings to set it up in the Android Mail app it tells me "Could not finish. Something went wrong. Please try again." and that's as far as it gets.
