I have the Google Drive app on several devices. It is very important to me. Last year it got shut down by Google for containing " contaminated" files which were just Excel files containing hyperlinks. Although the hyperlinks were perfectly safe my drive was frozen for some length of time then I had to remove the offending files for it to work again. I deleted them and eventually Drive got back to normal but it was a huge pita.

I have an old windows tablet which has the drive all on it containing those files. It hasn't been turned on in years so it isn't a problem. I would like to use it this weekend but I'm afraid it will update and put those files back to online Google drive from Google drive folder in tablet as soon as I turn it on. This will freeze my drive and I go through the huge hastle again.

When I shut off the old tablet it definitely contained those Google forbidden Excel files in the Google drive folder. If I turn it on will drive update to current status without those files or will it put them right back when folder updates to cloud freezing me out again? What is the easiest way to ensure that doesn't happen?

Not sure how those files would freeze up your Drive (especially since they're not opened at upload and only displayed when used), but OK.

You can either turn off your WiFi when you turn the tablet back on or go to your Google Account and remove the old tablet from your list of devices, thus denying the device access to your account to upload or download anything. Once you clean up the files, you can re-add your Google account to the tablet and restore access to it.

Although, in theory, if the copy on your tablet is older than the deleted copy, the files would be deleted from your tablet, not the other way around (unless the computer modifies them at boot, then they'd have a newer time-stamp and they'd update and upload to Drive and synced to all other devices).

If I turn on tablet with wifi off can I uninstall Gdrive app then turn wifi on and install Gdrive app again?

If I just turned on the tablet with the old files still in gdrive folder would they automatically disappear from that folder on my desktop since I deleted them last year in folder of my computer?

Yup, absolutely. And if you only had the app but weren't syncing a folder from your tablet or computer (on Windows), then it doesn't matter if it connects or not, since it's not synced, it will only see what's currently in your Drive, but not upload or download anything automatically unless you do so manually.

I am syncing the Google Drive folder that automatically appears when I installed the old Google Drive app on the tablet. That folder contained the offending files when tablet was shut off. Since they are in that syncked folder I thought they might be uploaded to the cloud thus putting bad files up for google to block.

I've never noticed if deleting a file in the google folder in one computer causes the file to disappear in the googlefolder of another computer?

    It should
Maybe I'll just take the chance and turn on the tablet then. When file syncs hopefully the old "infected" files will be gone since I deleted them online. I know new files added elsewhere appear in the folder. I never noticed if files deleted online are still in the desktop app folder or if they go away.

Turn the tablet on with wifi disables. Rename the folder. Then turn wifi on. If it doesn't recreate a Drive folder, update Drive or, if you have to, uninstall it, then install it again.

(I can't understand why you had a problem - I've had many megs of Excel files with links in them on Drive. Unless, of course, you had links to kiddie porn or infected sites.)

Don't be rude. The links were to peoples' email addy's in outlook. If you click on them it opened outlook. I have no idea why google ruled them "infected". For years I had no problem then one day boom blocked. I figured out what it was by trial and error but when I googled it it had happened to other people too. These were straight up work files. They didn't even have macros.
