I "HAD" a Verizon pixel 2 XL but the screen broke and I used insurance to get a new replacement from insurion. Getting the new device. All setup and ready I noticed it has a much older build installed and a key variable seemed to be selectable, "OEM Unlock" in developer options WAS NOT greyed out.

Do I have hope in achieving root?

Install the driver into the PC. Unlock the bootloader and enable USB debugging. Plug the phone in and choose MTP. Then run adb, and ...

Here's a whole article on what to do. If it doesn't (but I think with that version you're in luck), you can't.

If Magisk installs, it works nicely. (But you can't update Verizon updates - if you do, you might lock the bootloader, which does a factory reset and removes root.)
