Why does my tablet suddenly play sound through speakers only?

My tablet has recently only been playing sound through the speakers when I plug my earbuds in. I've done this with two pairs, and previously the sound would come through the earbuds, but now it goes through the speakers and decreases the volume. I'm very confused.

Welcome to Android Central! Make sure the headphone jack is clear of any debris. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the jack, and a toothpick to root around for any lint.
