Android Central Question

Had a pixel 2 until recently, with the squeeze function that brings up the assistant. Worked really well, was rather slick.

When I switched over to this phone, I was excited at the idea of having the same function mapped to a button. Problem is, in practice, it doesn't work so well. Sometimes it goes into listening mode instantly, sometimes it seems like it has to load and launch the app. Sometimes seems like it just doesn't listen. Basically it's not very consistent making it difficult to use smoothly. Anyone have any idea?

Another thing to bear in mind is that if you use the assistant, then do something else, then use the assistant again, it's already in RAM. (And if you "closed" it using the Home button, it's still running.) That saves a lot of time over Android having to kill 3 apps to get the space to run the assistant, then loading the assistant from storage to RAM (where an app has to be to run).
