This seems to be a new variation on the "tiny amount of internal memory" problem.

(Samsung J5 with 8GB internal memory)

I've moved everything I can onto the SD card to free up as much space as possible, and now have a grand total of 383MB free.

I'm trying to download an app that's under 50MB, but apparently need another 142MB to do so. What am I missing here? Why would a 48MB app need 525MB?

    Many thanks in advance

Welcome to Android Central! An 8 GB phone usually has only about 3 GB of available internal storage to the user, after accounting for the OS and any preinstalled bloatware. That 3 GB can get used up pretty quickly with apps you install and updates to preinstalled apps. The system also has a certain storage threshold below which it won't let you install an app, because the system needs a certain amount of storage available for cached data. Your main option is to uninstall apps until you have enough space to install this new app.

In the future, make sure the next device you get has at least 32 GB of internal storage. Even 16 GB is too small for most people's usage.
