How do I turn off FB Messenger notifications while the APP is open.

While I am in a chat with someone, every time they message me I get the notification sound. It's extremely annoying.
I still want to get notification sounds from Messenger when I don't actively have the app open, but getting notifications for chat messages I am actively reading needs to stop.

I'm on a Note 9 if that helps.

I don't think you can differentiate between "wen the app is open" and "when the app isn't open" (it's actually "when the app is in the foreground" and "when the app is in the background" - most people use the Home button to get out of an app and that leaves the app running).

I suggest that you email Facebook and ask them to add that to the choices in the app.
