Some of the songs ive put on my phone skip their last few seconds and goes to the next song.

It's not all the songs in my library though it is annoying

I've tried extending it by half a second and even a full second but it always ends with a few seconds left on the actual song.

This happens when I'm not viewing it in the player (i.e. when the screen is locked)

can someone help me out here?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone, and which music app? Are the music files in mp3 format? Are they saved to Internal Storage or the SD card?

Currently using an (old) Galaxy S4, and it's like that with the default music app and google music app. Music files are in mp3 and they're currently in internal storage

Where are the mp3's from? Did you rip them from your own CD, or are they downloaded from some website?

It might have something to do with that. Can you compare it with an mp3 that you ripped from a CD, or one you purchased and downloaded from a music site like the Play Store?

See what happens if you download a legitimately free mp3 file, like from here: mp3 classical sound samples. Do those files also skip at the end?

might not be conclusive since only a few songs on in my library are like that, while the others play out fully

the files that do skip are consistent, and are always the same onea

Hmm -- that could still mean it's a byproduct of the conversion process.

I agree with B.Diddy it sounds like a conversation issue. Since it's consistent with the same files, even though they play fine on the PC in another format, on a different player. You could try converting them again, trying a different converter program or converting them on your device. There are several converter apps out there in the play store.

That's good to hear! It may be that the stock music app on the S4 is simply too obsolete to handle the files.
