I have begun having the black screen issue on every video I open on a Nexus 7 Tablet. Haven't found a fix for tablet, only phones.
Try using the VLC for Android app. Probably the reason for videos not playing on your Nexus 7 tablet is the age of the OS, particularly if it's the 2012 version.
