I went from a S7 to a S9+ yesterday and I want to get email and text notifications the same way as my S7.
When emails or texts would come in on my S7 there would be a number ( depending on how many emails) along side the icon.
How do I set up the S9+ the same way?

The unread counters are a cooperation between the app and the launcher (app displaying your home screen).
Come combinations work better than others, for any given version of android.

    Which launcher are you using?
    Which email app?
    Which email provider?
Which email protocol (POP3, IMAP, Exchange)?

This is a POP3 account. The app is the one on the Samsung phone.

I use Comcast as the internet/email provider

With my old phone, the S7, the counter was there from the start, so I would assume the S9+ would be the same, but it isn't

Ok, found a solution. In settings under notifications I needed to turn on the App icon badges. In that setting, you can pick whether or not to show with the number.
