How to skip the data protection to open my O+ phone?

My husband added data protection on my phone. When he was trying to open my gmail account, he mistakenly entered the wrong password for 3 attempts then the phone got locked and asked for data protection password. We unable to open it anymore even we reset the phone.

Welcome to Android Central! What's the model name of the phone? Was this data protection feature one that came with the phone, or did you install a 3rd party security app for it? If your husband created the data protection password, he should've remembered it (otherwise, I'm guessing he'll be in the doghouse for about a month:-\).
