5G has nothing to do with wifi. The router will still work.
As far as the networks, any carrier that foes to 5G will still be maintaining their 3G and 4G networks in the same cities, so if you have an older phone it will still work. And 5G phones will still do 2G, 3G and 4G, so if you're not in one of those cities you'll still be able to use the network.
So until 4G is totally eliminated from the networks (and since Verizon is the first US carrier planning to switch, they;ll probably be full 5F-only by about 2035), I don't think you'll have anything to worry about. You won't want to be keeping a 15 year old phone.
Practically speaking, 5G network or 5G phone - won't make any difference - except in speed. If you use a 5G phone on a 5G network you'll probably be getting almost 500mbps initially. (The problem with that is that the internet is only running at about 5mbps, so all it means is that you can be downloading 4 or 5 huge files and watching a streaming movie at the same time. No single stream is going to get 500mbps. No single stream gets 100mbps, which is 4G's top speed. Even Verizon's "300mbps" "expected download speed" is unrealistic.)
