I thought adoptable storage was abandoned in general. In either case, it never was recommended due to performance losses and corrupted SD cards.
To the OP, you may still have options, so long as you understand the risks and are willing to accept them. SD cards are not designed for the constant data writing that happens with Android app use, so you can expect it to go bad rather quickly and should keep thorough backups. They are also slower than internal storage, so expect longer loading times as well. They are best suited for individual files like media and documents.
If you want to try it, go to the phone's settings and into the app manager. Select the app(s) you want to move and see if it gives you the option to move them to the SD card. Not all phones allow this, and not all apps are programmed to be moved as well. Those that can be moved still leave some data on internal storage to properly run, so the amount of space freed up will vary. When those moved apps need to be updated, they will be moved back to internal storage and you'll need to move them again.
If internal storage space for apps is an issue, the only practical long term solution is to replace the phone with one with more internal storage.
