Why do I keep losing my contacts periodically

I have a Moto with Android Oreo and have shifted from a windows Phone hence all the contacts are through the outlook app and the sync has been switched on but off late, every 2-3 days I keep losing all my contacts and I have to reboot my outlook account to get them again but this time that isn't working either. (The first time this happened, I created a backup in my Gmail contacts app but that has mysteriously disappeared too)

Android works on Google, not Microsoft, so you should be using the Contacts app for your contacts, and they should all be entered as Google contacts (not Phone, Device, SIM or anything else, but in your Google account - that's the first line when you add a new contact). Then they won't keep disappearing.
