I recently bought an android phone, started it up and updated the software. After about a day I formatted the memory back to factory settings, and did not back it up. However, when I restarted it, a bunch of apps that I had not previously downloaded had been installed. Is this because of the update or is something wrong that causing it to automatically be installing apps?

More information like the make/model of your phone and carrier would be helpful. Also the names of some of the apps.

In general some updates do add new apps, it's rather common on carrier branded phones. I'm also wondering if this isn't related to a Google back up restoring apps from another device you had.
