I have a comma to the left of the space bar and a period to the right, but the majority of the time, when I hit the comma key, it converts it to a period in both text and email. Please advise.

Welcome to Android Central! What language/region is the keyboard set to? If it's set to a region where they use commas instead of periods for things like decimal points, and periods instead of commas as separators in large numbers (i.e., 1.000.000 instead of 1,000,000), I wonder if it's trying to autocorrect for you.

Period and comma on Galaxy PHONE are widely separated by the space bar, with the latter to the right of it, the former to the left. Clearly, the designer knew that one was not interchangeable with the other, and that users would sometimes need a comma, sometimes a period. So why does the little POS give me periods when I touch the comma key on the left. This is intermittent and seemingly random. It is also, as someone else mentioned here, infuriating.

Same problem here! My Galaxy S9 Keyboard is set to standard English (United States). Please tell me there is an option to turn this off because I know the difference between a comma and a period, and I want to use commas where I please.

If you go to keyboard settings, Smart Typing, and turn off Auto Punctuate, that should do the trick. This feature inserts a period and space when you hit the spacebar twice. Chances are, when you hit the comma, it registers as a spacebar and when you hit the spacebar again it inserts the period. That is what was happening for me.
