Just received my new Pixel 2xl to replace ageing Galaxy S5. Had to change Sim card from micro to nano. Did all the necessary updates, and re-installed my original apps to the new phone. All photos previously held on the old phone have been transferred correctly to Pixel. However, when accessing my apps and clicking on the 'Photos' icon, there are literally hundreds of my old photos dating back 2-3 years. They are not shown anywhere in my Pixel folders.
    Appreciate any advice.

Welcome to Android Central! Those are probably photos that were backed up to your Google Photos in the cloud. That's what the Google Photos app is designed to do -- your main photos screen shows every photo that you've backed up to your Google Photos in the cloud. Those photos in the cloud don't take up any space on your phone.
