Welcome to Android Central! You often can't remove that widget. Long-press it -- if nothing happens, then it can't be removed. In that case, install a 3rd party launcher like Nova Launcher, which does let you remove the Google search widget.

Welcome to the forums. As B. Diddy said it all depends on the launcher. The Moto G5 Plus comes with Launcher3 and the Google search bar can't be removed unless you use a custom launcher. The funny thing is that the Moto G5S Plus, even running the same Android version, uses the Moto App launcher instead and you can remove the widget.
