Contacts have all disappeared from Sony XZ2.

Cannot restore contacts which disappeared whilst scrolling through list. Tried to restore but got nowhere. Google 'sync experiencing problems'.
Have cleared caches and data both in phone and contacts from Settings. And restarted phone.
Don't know what to do next.

Welcome to Android Central! Can you clarify -- are the missing contacts all saved to your Google Contacts in the cloud? If you go to contacts.google.com on your computer browser, do you see those contacts? If you do, at least they're safe in the cloud.

So you removed all the data from your contacts app? And was your synching on? You may have deleted your contacts. Are you running Lookout backups regularly?
