    Is there a way for the background in gmail not to be plain white? Its hard for me to know if a message is new the way it looks with that background.

    Unfortunately, nope (at least not natively). There is no 'Dark Mode' supported on the GMail app yet. You can 'theme' the app with 3rd party apps like Substratum, but in most phones you need root for that to work.
