[Android Central Question]

When I opened my tracphone this morning the page was blank and there was a big red pencil mark/arrow pointing down from top

I put in the the charger and within 1 minute the Red Mark was gone and it said 78% charged
When I turned it off last night it was about 90%

I just put in a new battery 6 months ago, ordered from tracfone

Welcome to Android Central! Does the battery drain quickly? If the phone persistently shuts off, even if the battery level is still relatively high, the battery is failing. You might have only purchased the battery 6 months ago, but considering that phone was released 4 years ago, the battery might have also been sitting on a shelf for about that long, which means it may have already degraded quite a bit by the time you bought it. You could try a new battery, but it's possible the same thing will happen.

Shouldn't a cell last more than 3 yrs?
What do you suggest I replace it with; I have Tracfone but unsure of the phones they sell

I have always used Tracfone, but am afraid to order from them as unsure of quality or?

Check reviews, then choose the phone to buy. The one thing no manufacturer is pushing for is long time between charges. Everyone wants a thin phone. Everyone wants a light phone. That means a short time between charges. (If you need more, carry a power bank with you.)

I should rephrase that -- does the phone frequently shut off when the battery still shows plenty of charge? That can still mean a failing battery. It's consistent with a battery dendrite, which @Rukbat would be able to explain in more detail.

Regarding your question about a cell phone battery lasting 3 years -- that depends largely on your usage patterns. To maximize your battery lifespan, it's advisable not to let it discharge deeply (i.e., lower than about 30%) on a regular basis. It's also important to avoid temperature extremes. If you don't take care of the battery, it can start deteriorating noticeably in as little as 6-12 months.

Battery dendrites are a different matter, and are difficult to predict (and I'm not sure if there's any way to prevent them when they happen).

As far as dendrites go, I just check Lithium Battery Dendrite links periodically to see how the industry is getting along with the research. Once it's solved, it's still going to be a few years before we see actual batteries with the changes.
