What are the best options for a small Android phone?

In 2012, I got my first smartphone: an HTC EVO 4G LTE (4.7" display, considered large at the time). In 2014, I got my second, an original Moto X (4.7" display, considered slightly smaller than average at the time). In 2017, I got a Sony Xperia X Compact (4.6" display and about the only decent option under 5"). All this while, phones have gotten bigger and bigger, but my hands haven't grown. Now, I can barely find anything under 5". Why are they making all the phones so big? What are my best options for a display of at least 4.5" but less than 5"?

Actual phone size or just screen? The screen size may be bigger, but the phone physically isn't. The Galaxy S10E is 5.8 inches, but it's similar dimensions to the 4.7 inch iPhone 7 and smaller than the 5.5 inch Note 2.

I would also suggest the Samsung Galaxy S10E.

The Galaxy S10E is still about half an inch taller than the Xperia X Compact and the 2013 Moto X (5.59" vs. 5.08"). It's also about 0.2 inches wider (2.75" vs. 2.56). I really want a phone that's smaller than that.
