    Because the insides of the batteries have chemicals that produce gas if the reactions occur while exposed to heat. It's a relatively expected occurence to happen to batteries as they age. Just stop using it and get a new one.

    Yip, replace the battery.

    It should also be noted that swollen batteries are more prone to rupturing and are a fire hazard. Ideally, you should pull the battery and store it in a solid fire proof/resistant container. Do not toss it in the trash or self serve recycling boxes. You need to find a shop that can accept it and properly discharge/dispose of it.

    And why after 2 years? You're probably draining it well past 40% regularly. If you want the battery to last, keep it between 95% and 40%.
