Pixel 3 XL cannot hear caller in car speakers when connected via BT

I have tested this issue on 2 different Pioneer AVH decks
This problem does not exist in my Ford Edge Sport with factory deck
I can connect just fine and spotify and other radio and video sounds work just fine playing over car speakers put as soon as I make a call I cannot hear the caller speaking but they can hear me ok using the handsfree mic.
Very frustrating and this was also happening to my other Pixel XL but when my Iphone connects to it the call works just fine.

Make sure that you have "Phone" checked in the Bluetooth settings for the Pioneer. If "Media" is checked, but "Phone" isn't, you'll have exactly what you describe.
