What does battery optimization do on my Alcatel phone to help with my battery performance?

I'm having problems with my battery holding power and charging and have always wondered if optimization helps? Thanks for any help

Basically it forces those apps you don't need running into sleep. If you have battery problems, it's probably a bad battery.

For longest life, keep the battery between 40% - 95%. If it gets down to 40% and you can't charge it, turn it off. (Lithium batteries are thin and light, they're not deep-discharge batteries.)
