Even though you are not always getting a failed notification it sounds like the app is crashing. When apps crash or in this case fails to open it could be that the processor is working to open the app and gets stuck in a loop or overwhelmed slowing the process down, sometimes appearing to stop or freeze. Have you tried clearing the cache for the app? That would be the first step, since it appears to be only affecting the SMS app. If you were having multiple app crashes or freezes then it might be something else but we'll just look at the problem you mentioned.

First and easiest thing is to clear the app cache. Open settings>applications, then scroll to your SMS app info page and clear the cache. You might have to go into a tab for data to find this. Once you've cleared the cache restart your phone and try the app again. Often just restarting the phone will clear the cache as part of its shutdown procedure which is why it is so important to restart your phone on a regular basis. If everything is working, great, if not try also clearing the app data in the same way on that same screen. If your SMS has a log-in, like with Next SMS where logging into an app account gives the user some added features, you may have to log-in again. You should not loose any messages but you might loose anything stored on your clipboard.

If clearing the cache and the data with a restart doesn't help it could be that there is too much data for it to successfully load. You might be able to get around this by starting your device in safe mode here is how you would do that; https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...cs/DOC-33853&usg=AOvVaw3QVcY_JnDwxACJhHEhhbhR , then try the app again once the phone is in safe mode.

Once you've gotten into the app the issue may be a simple one of just too many messages. I've seen people have conversations from years ago still on their devices or tens of thousands of messages that they have just never deleted. This can clog the works too. So once in try to clear some of the clutter then restart the phone and see if everything works.
