I have an Alcatel Pixi 4 which I only use as a spare device. It has no sim card I don't need it to work as a phone. It has a 16gb sd card. I want to install Messenger but there is not enough space in the internal memory. I have not installed any apps myself therefore can't uninstall any in order to free up memory. I can't see where I can make it install the Messenger app (or indeed, any app) on the sd card. Or change the default storage to the sd card. Or move / remove some of the c**p already on it which I will never use! Grateful thanks (please keep any answers simple as I am no good with all this)

Adoptable Storage - essentially, the ability to format an SD card as a part of the phone’s internal storage- was introduced with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Nevertheless, some manufacturers disabled the option. If you have that, you may be able to do it.

Removing pre-installed apps normally requires root access.

Welcome to Android Central! You can tell if the phone supports Adoptable Storage by trying to format any SD card -- if it doesn't give you the option to choose between formatting it as Portable vs Internal Storage, then it doesn't support Adoptable Storage. In that case, all you can hope for is the ability to Move to SD in the Settings>Apps menu. Choose an app there and see if there's a Move to SD button. If there is, that will move a portion (usually only a small one at that) of the app to the SD card. If you don't see a Move to SD button, then you're limited to whatever internal storage is available. You can't; download and install an app directly to an SD card if the phone doesn't support Adoptable Storage.

But the app has to be installed to internal storage first, and if it won't install without moving it, you can't install it to move it. It has at least 8GB internal storage (it also comes in a 16GB version), so if there's nothing on it but what came with it, there should be plenty of space ti install Messenger. (But texts, pictures, videos and music all count in subtracting from that 8GB. Move all that to the SD card first.)
