I lost my Samsung phone and therefore all my contacts and my calendar. Can I access my calendar online? I did not use Google Calendar as far as I'm aware, I used the inbuilt calendar app.

The inbuilt calendar app might have been syncing to Google, if you set it up that way. Probably not though since you had no idea about that. Basically if you weren't syncing anywhere, then no your calendar is lost. You can try checking Google Calendar if you had synced to it.

    therefore
The ‘therefore’ only applies if you have made no backups. If you have backed up, only the device is lost, not the personal data.

Welcome to Android Central! This is why I always recommend entering events into your Google Calendar account and saving contacts to your Google Contacts account, not using the local Phone account. Your Google account automatically syncs to the cloud, but the local Phone account doesn't sync anywhere automatically.
