Is it possible for an android phone protected with a pattern password to automatically unlock itself without being touched and then open an old whatsapp message and scroll half way down the message ?

If it is, I think it would be exceedingly improbable.

Welcome to Android Central! No, it's not possible. If this happened to you, it may be that you have the phone's Automatically Lock interval set for more than a few seconds, and the phone accidentally turned on in your pocket. If the Automatically Lock interval is set for, say, 2 minutes, that means that if the phone is turned back on within 2 minutes of the screen going to sleep, you don't have to enter the pattern again. If this happens in your pocket, it'd be relatively easy for random things to happen, like WhatsApp being opened and a message scrolling down halfway.
