How do I list my contacts by first name

Depends on your Contacts app (and phone, if you're using the stock one). Not all Contact apps allow this option, but if yours does, it should be in the Settings once you're in the app.

For instance, on Samsung phones, in the Contacts app, you can tap the menu button, go into Settings (the cog icon) and adjust the Name format to your liking (First,Last or Last,First).

Welcome to Android Central! Open the Contacts app, tap Menu>Settings>Name Format, and change that to First Name First. You can also change how the contacts are sorted in that menu.
