When power level gets below 35% the phone freezes and none of the buttons work. It then shuts off by itself and I have to open it. After recharging phone works just fine. This behavior started just a days ago. Disconcerting , to say the least.

Welcome to Android Central! Does this happen in Safe Mode? https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-38160

After it shuts off and you restart, is the battery significantly lower? If so, I'd worry about a failing battery. Do you regularly let it drain to zero or near-zero? If so, that can significantly shorten the battery's overall lifespan. If you treat the battery kindly, it might just be a defective battery.
