I've been watching normal (2D) movies on the Gear. The theater-like experience is great (this has become my favorite way to watch movies), and the quality is pretty good EXCEPT for dark scenes. There is a threshold of darkness at which some kind of auto brightness kicks in and the pixels all brighten from near black to "random" shades of tinted gray.

Is there a way to turn this auto-brightening off?
