Battery was fully charged last night but when i woke up it was dead, happened before so i just charged it but when i started it up it was updating the firmware but it's been like this for hours now, i can get it into download mode and have tried holding power+down for reset but it just shows the little droid and installing system update text then turns right off. there's files on there that haven't been backed up yet so i'm not willing to do a factory reset

Welcome to Android Central! Chances are that the firmware has become corrupt, or the motherboard is failing. There hasn't been an official update for the G2 in ages, so what you're seeing is more likely a glitch. I'm not sure there's much you can do about it, sorry!

Can you get into recovery, maybe clear cache and see if you can reboot, otherwise I dont see no other option then factory reset

The problem with LG phones is for almost all of the models, there's no way to clear the cache partition in Recovery -- they prevent the user from doing that. I think there were a few carrier-specific models where it was possible, but in general, it wasn't.
