How can i search contacts with more than just first letter of their name?

I'm a recent convert from Windows Phone. I have a OnePlus 6. I have a lot of contacts. When I search for a contact on the OnePlus it only gives me the option to use the first letter of their name. This does not narrow the search enough. What do I need to do to be able to use more than one search character (eg 'sm' for 'smith')?

Some of your favorites, i guess assign them to speed dial .. but we see what other members say .

Welcome to the forums. If you use the search option in the dialer and the contacts app (magnifying glass top right) you should be able to type as many letters as you want to narrow the search.
