Why is there a headphone symbol when my headphones are unplugged

[Android Central Question]

So i was on a trip to a island and i had my phone with me. The night i got back my phone said headphones were plugged in when they weren't. Im not sure how to fix it, and i tried almost everything. Also, when headphones are actually plugged in it shows a headphone symbol, but when i take them out it shows a headphone with a cord symbol.

What have you tried to avoid doing them again?

Do you have any dirt or lint in the headphone jack? It's possible that might be causing it to show headphones are connected when they're not.

Welcome to Android Central! I agree with Laura Knotek -- use a can of compressed air to blow out the jack, and a toothpick to root around. Then see if the problem goes away.

You've also tried rebooting, right?
