Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Do you mean that when you put it up to your ear, and then take it away, it tells you that you need to swipe to unlock the screen? That means that you either turned off the proximity sensor, or the phone doesn't have one to begin with. This feature is to prevent your face from accidentally pressing onscreen buttons while you're on a call (if the screen doesn't turn off during the call).
