    They protect your info when using public Wi-Fi. That's about the only reason for most people to use one. If you use your phone for business, your company may require you to use one to ensure their private data remains private too.

    That goes for any phone, not just HTC.

    And that's for the "VPN apps" you get online. Many companies use a VPN for you to get into the company network from outside, and those you get from the company's IT department.

    (As for using a VPN to download things illegally, don't. If the company running the VPN server is faced with a FISA warrant, they'll give all the "not logged" information to the government.)

    Of course, if you're in China, a VPN is the only way to get to most IP addresses outside the Great Firewall of China. (I don't know how good the Chinese government is at finding people doing that, though.)
