Android 9 Favorites screen functionality

Older versions included a 3 dot option to allow access to each entry so you could text or edit etc. The 9 favorites seem to only allow you to call, way to waste way more space and remove half the functionality of the feature. I hate it.

Welcome to Android Central! Can you elaborate on what you're trying to do? Are you trying to place a widget or shortcut on the homescreen for a favorite contact? Or are you talking about the Favorites tab in the Phone app?
