    When you delete the photos from gallery, it will pop out "If you delete photos, they will be removed from all devices", do not tick it.

    If the pictures are "in the cloud" (Google sync), what's on your phone is just thumbnails, so deleting 1,000 of them isn't going to save you very much space. It will just keep you from being able to view them from the phone unless you go to Google Photos.

    Welcome to Android Central! If you're using Google Photos, select the photo, tap the Menu button, then Delete From Device. Don't tap the garbage can icon, because that will put every instance of the photo in the Trash (i.e., the local copy and also the one in the cloud).
