[Android Central Question]

My PC's wifi adapter often does not receive a 5ghz signal but my phone does. Will there be side effects if I use my phone as a network extender? (enable mobile hotspot which is connected to 5ghz network and connect my computer to my phone hotspot)

Welcome to Android Central! I don't think that'd work, because you can't use the phone's hotspot to broadcast a wi-fi signal it's receiving. The hotspot is used to broadcast the mobile network signal it's receiving. Wi-fi extenders are relatively cheap, so that would probably be the best bet (although in my experience, extenders can act a little wonky, which is why I ultimately upgraded to a mesh network).

You can try a USB Tether app - there are plenty of free ones - but they may not work. (Most of the cheaper extenders are 2.4GHz only, but if there's a spot in your house that has power, can receive a good 2.4GHz signal from the router, and can be reached on 2.4GHz by the PC, it would work.)


The proper way, of course, is a wired extender (or just a reversed router*).

*Connect the routers together LAN to LAN, disable DHCP on the second one and set its static IP to outside the DHCP range of the first one.

sounds like the pc is too far away for a good 5ghz signal. stick with 2.4 instead of using your phone. 5 is powerful but only good for short distances.

And unless you're running Google Fiber with a 1 Gbps plan, the 2.4 should give you plenty of speed for internet use.
