Home screen does not show unread text messages on my galaxy 7 android phone?

On my home screen it use to show the count of unread text messages but now does not.

Have you checked your notification settings for the app? Should be Settings>Applications>"your messaging app", then on the app page locate Notification Settings. Ensure "app badge" is enabled, along with any others that you would like to enable. Then on your way out of the app page, clear the app cache and restart the device. Test it and see if it is working. Are you using any 3rd party launcher ? Is this the stock Samsung message app? Also can long press it then tap info notification make sure everything on.

Just to clarify....

When a new message comes in, do you get a visual and/or sound notification?
Does the texting app show that new message while not counting the old unread messages?
Does the texting app count none of the new and old unread messages?

Which phone?
Which version of android?
Which carrier?
Which texting app?
Which launcher app (home screen app)?
