Receiving someone else's sent and received text messages

I've been receiving someone else's sent and received text messages. me and that person switched phones but they're both factory reset before we switched how is that possible?

Welcome to Android Central! Did you switch SIM cards as well? Which carrier are you both on? The phone number is associated with the SIM card, not the Google account. The proper thing to do would have been to take your SIM cards out, switch phones, and then reinsert your respective SIM cards into your new phones.
