    Try it on WiFi, with mobile data switched off. I'm guessing that that would test whether the SIM is bad, or perhaps the SIM tray contacts.

    Welcome to Android Central! Does the toggle in the system settings menu actually turn off? Are you connecting to a VPN?

    Yes, it toggles off and I get a message that it is off. No VPN.

    belodion, I could try that but it happens intermittently with no regularity so I'd have to leave it in that condition for days to be sure.
